Just curious, I am currently planning on recording a GC full length sometime hopefully near the end of the year.

I'm getting much more experienced in recording, and im confident I can get a great drum tone... but I was wondering if there is anyway to get that big 'room' drum sound in a small room... Most of the reverbs I've used in the past are kind of muddy and synthetic. We will probably take a long time to record drums, and I don't think renting a big room like musiplex is financially appropriate (And they were kind of assholes to us last time we rented there)... We will probably be needing to put money into other things, such as actually being able to release it ourselves, art, etc.

I am also curious about this same thing. Hate Division will be starting drum tracks for our first full length album around the start of September. It'd be nice to get some pointers on getting a big drum sound or pointers on recording drums in general.

If you are in a small room, there is probably a hallway or another room close by, put a mic in there. The "big room" sound is generally created with ambient room mics, so you will just need to create it with ambient other room mics, instead.

The extra mics are a great idea to get a full drum sound... I'm no expert, but in my experience to get a solid kick sound, blankets and pellows can be used to cover the space around your bass drum. So you create a small little bass drum fort (if that makes sense)... It creates a really dense low end kick sound. This mixed with the extra mics as mentioned above would probably create a really nice full sound

If you use a wide spread for your overheads. Isolate the kick mic well (it'll help in the mix big time) and like previously mentioned, set up a room mic. Even if it's a small room you can compress the shit out of the room mic in the mix and it'll still sound bigger. As far as a room mic, use a large diaphragm condenser (like and akg 414 if you can get one).
